Climate Change and Health Promotion Position Paper 2024 final Page 1Climate Change and Health Promotion Position Paper
Australia is one of the healthiest countries in the world. This is largely because of effective public health and its core services – protection, prevention and health promotion which includes action to create and support the ecological conditions that enable Australians to enjoy a healthy and happy life. Health promotion’s role has never been so significant. This position paper reaffirms commitment by AHPA to planetary health and the critical role of health promotion in addressing climate change impacts. It was prepared by Kate Lowsby and Gabriela Martinez, with input from Teresa Capetola.

AHPA and PHAA Health Promotion and Illness Prevention Policy Position Statement

Health Promotion and Illness Prevention Policy Position Statement
The Australian Health Promotion Association (AHPA) and the Public Health Association of Australia (PHAA) have jointly updated their national policy statement on Promoting Health and Preventing Illness. The revised and endorse AHPA and PHAA Health Promotion and Illness Prevention Policy Statement 2021 is available here. The Policy clearly positions health promotion and illness prevention as key contributors to population health and wellbeing and it forms the foundation of our advocacy for greater investment in Health Promotion and Illness Prevention now and in the lead up to upcoming state and federal elections. We hope that you find the updated Policy a useful tool in your work. The Position Statement was informed by a Background Paper commissioned in March 2018 by AHPA and PHAA and prepared by Dr Toni Delaney-Crowe at Flinders University South Australia.

2023 InfographicInvesting in health promotion is a smart strategy. It keeps people out of hospital, reduces the burden on overstretched health services and allows people to live healthier, more productive lives. Health promotion and illness prevention saves lives, money and deliver the best public return on investment in health. Every dollar invested in health promotion and prevention goes on to save $14. In the lead-up to the Federal Budget 2023, AHPA calls on the Australian Government to get serious about promoting health and to commit at least 5% of the health budget to Health Promotion and Illness Prevention, in line with the National Preventive Health Strategy 2021-2023.

As part of this campaign, AHPA developed an updated infographic. Download the full version here. AHPA can provide members with the individual tiles contained in the infographic for use in their work. Tiles are available in JPEG or PDF formats and include: health promotion, health equity, smoking, overweight and obesity, alcohol use, climate change, and healthy built environments.
