Description: The Department of Health is currently seeking to appoint a Health Promotion Officer for their Population Health Department at Albany. In this role you will undertake the development, implementation and evaluation of health promotion programs within the Great Southern region which are both multidisciplinary and intersectorial with a focus on community participation. You will also require a high level of interpersonal skills and the ability to work collaboratively with stakeholders and the local community.

So, I am running off to add another little one to my growing family. My time and energy will now be needed elsewhere. I have really enjoyed working with the wonderful AHPA WA team, Emma at Healthway and our scholarship recipients and host agencies.
Before I go, I wanted to share a bit about my time as the Scholarships Coordinator as I believe this is a unique job opportunity and for anyone who is considering the role, I would definitely say go for it! Don’t feel like you already need to be working as a ‘consultant’ – I wasn’t. Managing your own work and coordinating a large program can sound daunting, but if you have good organisation skills, the ability to learn as you go and ask plenty of questions, and a little bit of enthusiasm and passion for health promotion, you will be perfect for the role.

An annual Student Careers Information Night provides past health promotion graduates with an opportunity to share their career journeys and illustrate the diversity of career pathways available to graduates. It provides students with the opportunity to interact and speak to a range of government and non-government organisations in the health promotion area.
"Advocacy is a catch-all word for a set of skills used to create a shift in public opinion and mobilise the necessary resources and forces to support an issue, policy, constituency" (Wallack et al 1993, p27).
The WA Branch actively seeks to advocate on behalf of its members on a range of health and related social issues at a local or state level. The Association publishes letters, writes submissions, and/or contacts politicians regarding health issues such as road trauma, men's health, domestic violence, public transport and smoke free venues (just to name a few).

The Leadership Group is responsible for ensuring strong governance of the committee, strategic and operational direction and support to the whole committee. The Leadership Group is responsible for liaising with National and key stakeholders and for overseeing the delivery of the AHPA (WA Branch) and Healthway Health Promotion Scholarships program.
The role and function of the Finance Audit and Risk Management (FARM) Subcommittee is to maintain the Branch’s finances and mitigate identified risks. FARM is also responsible for overseeing the development of the WA Branch Reconciliation Action Plan (RAP).

The Branch Committee is supported by a Strategic Advisory Group (SAG), which is made up of senior health promotion practitioners from the variety of sectors who employ health promotion practitioners in WA. The SAG provides high level strategic support and advice to the Committee on key operational and strategic issues. The SAG assists the Branch to build a highly functional Committee, including the provision of mentoring and support to nurture future leaders.

Melinda has been involved in the WA Branch since 2014, starting in a Co-Vice Presidents role before taking on the Presidents role in July 2014. Melinda has worked in health promotion for six years in both injury prevention, and chronic disease prevention and management. Melinda brings experience in capacity building, governance, and developing stakeholder relationships. Melinda currently works at Diabetes WA in a Senior Project Officer role across the Health Services Division.
Courtney has been a member of the WA Branch Committee since 2013 sitting with the Members Services subcommittee. Courtney’s qualifications include a Bachelor of Health Science (Life Sciences) from Flinders University and a Postgraduate Diploma in Health Promotion from Curtin University. She is currently working in a performance monitoring and reporting role with the Aboriginal Health Improvement Unit at WA Country Health Service maintaining a strong focus on outcome-based approaches for Aboriginal health programs. Courtney has previously worked in health promotion roles implementing programs in tobacco control, alcohol harm-prevention, early childhood development and mental health.
Lorena completed her undergraduate health promotion studies at Curtin University in 2009. Since then she has been working in the NGO sector, predominately on tobacco control and skin cancer prevention programs. She is currently working at Cancer Council WA on the Tobacco Programs team. Lorena has been a member of the AHPA (WA Branch) Committee since 2013.

Leisha Aberle is a general committee member on the WA Branch. Leisha completed a bachelor degree in Nutrition in 2012 and continued with her studies completing a Post Graduate Diploma in Health Promotion in 2015. Her current role at Foodbank WA involves working collaboratively with communities, schools and primary health agencies to plan and deliver nutrition and food skills programs in regional and remote communities across WA. Her previous work involved Diabetes Service Coordination in a Primary Health Care context in WA. Her most significant achievement on the committee has been overseeing the development and future endorsement of the WA Branch’s Reconciliation Action Plan.
Stacey Nicole Keightley
Stacey is the Sponsorship and Health Promotion Manager at The West Australian Health Promotion Foundation (Healthway). Stacey has a passion for people, understanding what motivates them and how to influence changes in behaviour for the better. After 10 years in the commercial marketing sector in Sydney, Stacey returned to her hometown of Perth in 2012 and refocussed her efforts into health promotion. Stacey possesses a unique combination of marketing, media, sponsorship, online and health communication expertise and holds a Bachelor of Commerce (Marketing), Bachelor of Social Science (Politics) and a Post Graduate Diploma (Health Promotion).
Lauren Zappa is a passionate health promotion practitioner with a keen interest in chronic disease prevention and the impact of climate change on health. She chairs the Capacity Building and Excellence Sub-Committee, regularly coordinating professional development opportunities for the health promotion community. Lauren’s currently studying her Master’s in Public Health via Deakin University. This builds on her existing Health Promotion degree from Curtin University. Lauren is currently the Manager of the Diabetes Prevention Unit at Diabetes WA. Over the last six years she has worked on a variety of programs, including SunSmart and Healthier Workplaces WA at the Cancer Council WA.
Liz is a member of the Finance and Risk Management subcommittee. Liz is a Senior Health Promotion Officer at the South Metropolitan Population Health Unit, and is currently working with local government, WA health facilities and community groups to create settings that support good nutrition, physical activity and smoke free environments. Liz has a Bachelor of Exercise & Sport Science and Preventative Health, and a Masters in Health Science. She has previously worked in the Midwest of Western Australia as a Regional Health Promotion Officer with the WA Country Health Service, and as a Project Officer with the Department of Sport and Recreation.
Sarah Di Cristofaro
Sarah is a member of the Capacity Building and Excellence subcommittee. Sarah is a Health Promotion Officer at the South Metropolitan Population Health Unit with the Armadale Team. She is currently working in partnership with the City of Armadale to deliver numerous nutrition initiatives, developing a coalition to address food insecurity in the City of Armadale, and is on a multi-sectorial working party to roll out an accredited TAFE course in leadership development and population health. Sarah has a Bachelor of Science in Nutrition and Health Promotion. She has previously worked at Child and Adolescent Community Health as a Health Promotion Officer.
Amber Giblett is the chair of the Members Services subcommittee, and has been a member of the WA Branch committee since 2011. Amber graduated with a Bachelor of Science (health promotion) from Curtin University, and is currently completing a postgraduate degree in psychology. She currently works as a health promotion officer/population health coordinator at Great Southern Population Health, based in Albany. Her primary work areas are physical activity and nutrition, smoking cessation, social and emotional wellbeing and falls prevention. Amber enjoys the challenges (and many benefits!) of working in the country.

Kirsty de Blanken
Kirsty has been involved in the WA Branch committee since 2014 and is the chair of the Advocacy and Partnerships subcommittee. Kirsty completed a Nutrition degree in 2006 and a Postgraduate Diploma in Health Promotion in 2007, both at Curtin University. She currently works as a Senior Health Promotion Officer at the South Metropolitan Population Health Unit in the areas of nutrition, tobacco control and alcohol harm prevention. Kirsty has experience working in NGOs and government organisations both in WA and the UK, delivering programs in the areas of nutrition, bowel cancer screening, women’s health and building stronger families.
Welcome to the WA Branch of the Australian Health Promotion Association (AHPA).
The AHPA is the leading dedicated health promotion body in WA and is run by a team of volunteer health promotion professionals who meet on a monthly basis to progress objectives of the Association and provide support to its members.
WA was the first state/territory in Australia to form an AHPA Branch, and is your professional body when you work in health promotion. Become a member today and be a part of something great.
The AHPA (WA Branch) was developed as a result of the hard work and dedication of many leaders in the field of health promotion in WA. In 1985, Peter Howat became the first President of the WA Professional Health Educators Association (WAPHEA). Trevor Shilton took over this role in 1988. In 1989, a survey was conducted with 97% of members supporting the move for a name change to Australian Association of Health Promotion Professionals (AAHPP) and a national focus. This was confirmed at the June 1990 AGM, and subsequently the National Association, conference, journal and policies followed.
More recently the name was changed to the Australian Health Promotion Association. The AHPA has become the professional association specifically for people involved in, or with an interest in the practice, research and study of health promotion. The AHPA (WA Branch) continues to recruit and provide services for WA based members.
To improve the health status of Western Australians by building the leadership capacity of our members and making health promotion a priority.
The AHPA (WA Branch) Committee prioritises financial stability and good governance for the Branch, whilst continuing to deliver a range of core activities to serve the interests of members.
We also work hard to raise our profile and that of health promotion in WA via advocacy and building partnerships with key groups such as the Public Health Association of Australia (WA) and the Public Health Advocacy Institute of WA.

Carl is a Phd Candidate with Curtin University and is a rural based researcher and health promotion practitioner.
Carl joined the WA Branch Committee in 2016 and has served as a member of the Member Services and Advocacy and Partnerships subcommittees and as Vice-President. Carl is passionate about former strong partnerships and collaborations beyond health. Carl believes rurality is no barrier in serving the WA Branch and connects via social media (especially Twitter) and other means to prove that being based in the rural area is not a barrier to particiaption with AHPA or the workforce and research field.

Program funded by Healthway.
FOUR scholarships are on offer for 2019:
Ø One graduate scholarship;
Ø One Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander scholarship;
Ø One regional scholarship; and
Ø One of any category.
Each scholarship offered is for a six-month full-time paid health promotion work placement
under the supervision of an appropriately experienced health promotion professional (parttime
options can be negotiated). The successful applicant’s salary (plus 20% on-costs) is
funded by the scholarship with access to additional professional development funding.
