AHPA Workshop: Health Impact Assessment and Climate Change

12 May 2020, 9:00am-4:00pm

It is clear that climate change is already affecting the health and well-being of communities around Australia. These impacts will continue to unfold and our ability to protect and promote health will depend on our actions over the coming decade. This workshop will review the connections between climate and health and highlight how Health Impact Assessment (HIA) can be used to inform Vulnerability and Adaptation Assessments. It will provide hands-on examples of how the process is undertaken and provide participants with the opportunity to apply the approach to their own work. An overview of the ‘Operational framework for building climate resilient health systems’ will also be included.

Facilitators:
Dr Helen Brown, Director of the WHO Collaborating Centre for Health Impact Assessment, School of Public Health, Curtin University.
Dianne Katscherian, WHO Collaborating Centre for Health Impact Assessment, School of Public Health, Curtin University; Manager Health Impact Assessment, Department of Health, Western Australia (2003-2012).

Helen and Dianne have been working in the area of climate change and health since the early 2000s. They have utilised a Health Impact Assessment framework to develop a Vulnerability and Adaptation Assessment Guideline that has been used in multiple countries across the Asia Pacific and was the basis of UNFCCC training in Central and South America, Asia and Africa. They have also worked extensively with the Asian Development Bank to improve integration of health into development projects and they are lead authors of the national HIA guidelines published by enHealth in 2017.
