FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS - UNIVERSITIES

What is the purpose of accreditation of health promotion courses?

The purpose of course accreditation is to provide validated, agreed, and recognised quality assurance course structures for health promotion practice and education. It provides an opportunity to conduct a review of, and benchmark, health promotion courses.

How does accreditation benefit universities?

The benefits of offering accredited health promotion courses include enhanced credibility, offering more to students, competitive advantage, global recognition, networking opportunities, and contributing to the profession.

Are there specific eligibility criteria for universities to apply for accreditation?

Accreditation is available for full courses only (i.e., not modules or parts of courses). Full courses are defined as complete educational programs that cover all domains of the IUHPE Core Competencies and Professional Standards for Health Promotion and that can demonstrate how their learning outcomes relate to  defined performance criteria.

For more information regarding eligibility for accreditation, please visit the IUHPE website here.

How can a university contribute to the growth and development of the health promotion profession through course accreditation?

Course accreditation contributes to the profession's growth by ensuring programs meet quality standards, validating education for students, enhancing the institution's reputation, and enabling global recognition. Accredited programs highlight that health promotion practitioners have core competencies essential to health promotion practice.

Does AHPA, as the Australian NAO, provide accreditation of health promotion courses?

No, the accreditation of health promotion courses is the role of the IUHPE Global Accreditation Organisation (GAO). It is the responsibility of individual universities - independently of AHPA - to apply for course accreditation.
