SOUTH AUSTRALIAN BRANCH

Overview

Welcome to the SA Branch home page. We are glad you have found us and if you are a new member a special welcome! AHPA SA is your connection to the local Health Promotion community.

Interested in getting involved?

If you are interested in getting involved with activities of the SA Branch the best way to do this is to touch base with the SA BRANCH committee. Email us at [email protected].

We welcome visitors and members to attend committee meetings. This is a great way to network within the health promotion community.

AHPA (SA) Committee meetings are held every six weeks, after 5pm at a central location in Adelaide but we routinely teleconference in committee and other members who cannot make this location.

All SA members receive regular email updates from AHPA. Topics include job opportunities, professional development activities, international, national and state information relevant to the field of health promotion, notice of new resources and websites, the Branch newsletter and lots more. To be kept up-to-date on current events, please become a member of AHPA SA.

History of South Australia Branch

A group of interested health promotion professionals began meeting in early 1999 to ascertain the level of interest and commitment in establishment of a state branch of the Australian Association of Health Promotion Professionals. A core group formed an executive and met regularly to establish the terms of reference for the executive and develop branch aims and objectives. During this time the executive began to promote the Association to potential members and prepare a specific state-based constitution based on the National Constitution.

On the 3rd March 2000 the inaugural AGM of the Australian Health Promotion Association (SA Branch) was held. At this meeting it was agreed by Association members to formally establish Australian Health Promotion Association (SA Branch), accept the tabled constitution and the elect the inaugural committee with Janet Haydon as President.

SA Preventive Health Award

The Australian Health Promotion Association (SA Branch) co-sponsors the South Australian Preventive Health Award annually, in collaboration with the Public Health Association Australia (SA Branch).

This award recognises outstanding contributions to health promotion and public health in South Australia. Together, AHPA and PHAA emphasise the importance of investing in disease prevention and health promotion, developing healthy public policies, and ensuring that a wide range of social, behavioural, and environmental preventative services and programs are accessible to those who need them most.

Preventive health spans all phases of life, and includes early intervention initiatives, health communication strategies, targeting risk factors, preventive health research, and actions to address the broader social, environmental, and political determinants of health and wellbeing.

Who is eligible for nomination?

Any person or group of people who you believe has made a significant contribution to disease prevention and health promotion practice, teaching or research in South Australia, over a number of years.

Who can nominate?

Any financial member of AHPA or PHAA may nominate someone, provided you are familiar with the contribution made by that person/group. You do not need the prospective nominee’s permission to nominate them. Self-nominations will not be accepted.

Applications open in the lead up to the annual South Australian Population Health Conference, with the award presented at the conference (typically held in October/November).
